The RVM Guy, Wayne E Seguin Joins OSS Community Grant Program »

For many Ruby users, RVM (Ruby Version Manager) is the only way we install and select a version of Ruby (MRI 1.9.2, 1.8.7, Rubinius, JRuby and more), and how we manage isolated gem sets. With `.rvmrc` files, one project can be frozen against MRI 1.8.7 while another only uses JRuby. Want to use the multi-threaded hydra branch of Rubinius? That's easy too. RVM is the tireless pursuit of Wayne E Seguin over the last couple years, and no doubt the next few years to come. Engine Yarders want to say "Thanks Wayne!" for the past and the future, with an Engine Yard OSS Community Grant. This time, instead of assistance with travel and marketing we wanted to do something a little different. Wayne doesn't need special travel assistance getting to conferences to talk about RVM, advanced uses of Bash or his newest basement creation BDSM, because Wayne is now an Engine Yarder himself. We're going to fling him around the planet anyway. Instead, we chipped in with a new Mac Pro. Lots of parallel cores for JRuby and Rubinius to use. Wayne, thanks for RVM. We're proud to sponsor your work.

This week on Cloud Out Loud we talk with Ray Hightower of WisdomGroup. Ray tells us about how he got into doing Rails development while he was doing networking with Novell and Microsoft Windows NT. He is very active in the Chicago Ruby community and is an organizer for Chicago Ruby, WindyCityRails, WindyCityDB, and WindyCityGo. Ray gives us some insight into how he orchestrates great events that people are excited to attend, and that continue to grow in size each year. We found out there is even a github repo created by the people at Chicago Ruby to document how they organized the conference. They've got their event execution and planning down to an art. If you want to experience the Chicago tech scene for yourself, WindyCityGo is coming up April 9. There are some great talks lined up. If you register by Monday, March 21 you can snag a ticket at an early bird price and save yourself $80! Check out the lineup and register before the discount expires here. Now, just think how many Chicago hot dogs you can treat yourself to with that 80 bucks you saved... Load Podcast

Resources for Getting Started with Ruby on Rails »

Created at: 16.11.2010 01:02, source: Engine Yard Blog, tagged: Uncategorized books classes community courses irc rails ruby Tutorials

Ruby on Rails is leaving the early adopter phase and becoming more mainstream. More people want to learn Rails but don't know where to begin. Well, I have come to the rescue. The resource list below is a good starting point. It includes tutorials, books, blogs, podcasts and many other educational resources that have done wonders for me throughout my Rails learning process. I hope others will find them helpful too. I personally enjoy interactive and visual experiences. The interactive tutorials (sometimes with a live person) were very useful to me. However, plenty of other people prefer to learn by reading, so I have included great resources for these folks too. I also recommend attending meetups and conferences. Getting involved in the community is a great way to find mentors who can help you out, and participating at events and user groups is a good way to stay on top of the latest news and cool projects. If I've left out any resources that you've found helpful, I would love to hear about them. Please let me know about them in the comments section.
